Most of these files can be found in my database by searching “rasr” for Rent a Shared Room.  Important modifiers are: Housing, DOM (for Dying Old Men), DTY (for Died Too Young), Shank (for the Landlords), and Names of Characters (Partial List Provided).  We discuss the fates of some of the characters.  This will be our final slideshow chronicling our experience living at Shank’s Guest Home in Santa Ana.  We try not to interpret very much.  We have to point out that rather than be critical of Shank’s we feel it is more the nature of the Room and Board Rent a Shared Room Business.  We have a few places we lived to know how hard it is to make a go in this business sector.

Lived Experiences Should Be Remembered

I really could not do this closure report until I moved out of this venue.  I had always hoped it would get better.  I didn’t get better.  The people we associated at Shank’s Guest Home should be remembered.  Their sacrifices must be leveraged for improving things for those Renting a Shared Room who are Special Needs People (SNP) and the Seriously and Persistently Mental Ill (SPMI).  We group the photos of Keith (KET) together in order to point out how well he kept his composure through such hardship.  On good days Mel and Gloria were great landlords.  Between them and me most were good days.  Dealings with the other people was challenging on a daily basis.  In hindsight John Tviede was Keith’s best friend.  There were a few survivors, meaning they move out for known greener pastures, Mike Calentino being the most notable.  Mike came into his parent’s estate monies and resides independently in Idaho.

Final Slideshow Chronicling Shank’s Guest Home

This is my final slideshow focusing specifically on Shank’s Guest Home @ 2325 W Flora Street, Santa Ana California.  After living at Shank’s from June 2012 to March 2024 we lost our bed due to a stupid decision on my part and Grave Disability.  We are currently in a convalescence setting waiting placement.  Some of our helpers indicate we may get a single in a Senior Retirement setting.  This will be a huge change after living in house with some odd 10 people and sharing a room.  The last one we shared with was Theodore “Ted” Francis.  Ted’s diagnosis was unregulated Bi-polar.  He was miserable to live with especially get sleep in the same room with.  Periodically, when Ted went away it made a huge difference with improving my rest and sleep.  I also took overnight respites and slept like a baby.  One of my favorite respites was when the family put me up in Redondo for example during Thanksgiving.  I also got to stay with my friend Gerard in his Tiny House a few times.

Conclusions

I let the viewer draw most of their own conclusion with regards to seeing these semi-objective images of the Rent a Shared Room (RASR) experience.  We hope on day landlords can post honest pictures such as these about their operations.  More importantly we hope that one day the RASR experience globally improves.  I did not foresee that I would get eligible for a housing “Waiver” which would get me out of the RASR for SNP & SPMI persons’ loop or cycle.

Nature of Business

This for the most part is the nature of the SNP & SPMI RASR business, hardship.

Family

Now I have a word about family.  My family helped me and is helping me a good deal with this move.  They have been with me since my first Serious Episode Crisis back in 1988-1990.  From that crisis I demonstrated my best Resilience.  I bounced back with plenty of sleep, a full-time job, and good nutrition.  I returned to UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and made grades until once again my sleep depriving life-style started another worse episode.  All episode of crisis are not as bad.  This one is not a severe as my last episode of crisis back in 2012.  I owe a lot of my stability and tolerance from 2012-2022 to my association with the OC Health Care Agency (HCA).  Yet, my association with the HCA ultimately is not nor will be protective.  More on that at a later time.  Other consumers I think feel their associations with the HCA are protective.
