Sleep as an indicator of Health
Sleep serves as a vital indicator of overall physical and mental health, reflecting how well the body repairs, regulates, and defends itself.
Physical Health Indicators
Heart function:
Blood pressure and heart rate drop during deep sleep, allowing the cardiovascular system to rest and recover.
Metabolic balance:
Rest regulates hormones like ghrelin and leptin that control appetite, as well as insulin sensitivity for blood sugar control.
Immune strength:
Adequate rest helps the body build immune memory and fight off common infections like colds or the flu.
Mental and Brain Health Indicators
Toxin clearance:
The brain actively clears out accumulated daily toxins during deep rest.
Memory and mood:
Rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep supports memory consolidation, learning, and emotional stability.
Psychological warning signs:
Chronic insomnia or disrupted sleep patterns often act as early warning signs or triggers for anxiety and depression.
Warning Signs of Poor Quality
Trouble falling asleep within 30 minutes.
Repeatedly waking up during the night.
Feeling tired or unrefreshed despite spending enough hours in bed.
Increased risks for long-term conditions like Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease [0.6.3, Sleep is essential to health].
FYI – AI - Would you like tips on how to improve your sleep hygiene or learn more about the specific stages of sleep?
New Roommate Adjustment
Adjusting to a new roommate requires clear communication, setting early boundaries, and respecting shared spaces. Talk openly about expectations regarding cleanliness, guests, and daily routines right from the start to prevent small issues from turning into major conflicts.
Setting Ground Rules
Talk early: Discuss schedules, sleep times, and quiet hours during the first few days.
Define chores:
Decide how to split cleaning duties and take out the trash.
Share boundaries:
Be clear about food rules and whether items can be borrowed.
Guest policies:
Agree on a rule for when visitors or overnight guests are allowed.
Managing Daily Living
Be considerate:
Clean up after yourself in common areas immediately.
Respect privacy:
Give each other personal space and time alone.
Compromise:
Find middle ground when habits or preferences clash.
Aside - Promises and Perks
Promises are essential for building trust, integrity, and long-term relationships, whereas perks are auxiliary, non-wage benefits like snacks or lounge areas that enhance the work environment but do not replace culture. Effective leadership focuses on keeping promises rather than just offering perks, ensuring equitable experiences that foster employee retention.

This table had been substantially revised due to the fact in hindsight things were worse than we perceived.
20240319-TU-I was admitted via ambulance to Global Hospital in Santa Ana for inappropriate behavior. My judgment had become impaired. On July 4, 2024 I resolved 34 of my mistaken beliefs. The episode began in 2023 when I decided I needed to get off CloZAPine. My shared roommate, Ted, was also psychotic.

Sleep and Catastrophic Losses
Chronic sleep deprivation is a major risk factor for catastrophic human, medical, and operational failures, with accidents most likely between 1 a.m. and 8 a.m. Lack of sleep causes severe cognitive decline, including poor judgment and slowed reaction times, leading to disasters like the Exxon Valdez oil spill and Chernobyl.
Situational Update – Sleep Ability
20210427-TU: Last night Keith “Buster’ Torkelson MS enjoyed a second night straight of un-interrupted SLEEP. We here at Mentalation Solutions Group (MSG) recognized SLEEP as a thing greater than us. We have been designing a product we call Sleep Ability. Our Sleep Ability product is assessment-driven. For us and many others SLEEP has multiple dimensions being: Brain factors, mind factors, behavior factors, bodily factors, spiritual aspects, and environmental factors. This makes SLEEP complicated.
Essential
We feel that great SLEEP is essential to health and wellbeing. Nearly everytime since 1989 when Buster was first admitted to the Psych Ward SLEEP played a key role. From 2013-2023 Buster has not called “911” or been admitted to the Psych Ward. In part we owe this remarkable episode of remision on Buster putting SLEEP and SLEEP concerns near the top of his list of daily priorities. For Buster on the same priority as SLEEP is Medication Management. After writing this Buster was admitted twice and transferred twice in 2024. He now lives in a retirement community.
Ravinder to the Rescue
Years ago in 2007 after many years of consenting to medical experimentation (trial and error) by psychiatists Buster met Ravinder P. Singh MD (RPS). RPS saw patients at what was then Western Med Anaheim (WMA). He had to come back twice to WMA to get the right treatment. On the third try Dr. RPS initiated a CloZAPine chemotherapeutic regimen. We define chemotherapy in a broad sense meaning: “the treatment of disease by the use of chemical substances”. A side effect of CloZAPine is drowsiness. For Buster drowsiness translated into dose related quality of SLEEP. Up until 2024 Buster’s primary sleeper was CloZAPine. In 2024 Buster’s sleep issues worsened as measured by the amount and nature of his prescribed sleep associated as needed (PRN) medications.
Apprehension Moving
For the most part SLEEP is a daily activity. For Buster sleep is a requirement. So why is it from 2012-2024 that Buster suffered interrupted SLEEP. In 2023 his Rent A Shared Room (RASR) roommate sufferering from COPD making congestion, choking and coughing noises at bedtime, during the middle of the night, and in the morning. His RASR roommate’s pulmonologist prescribed Oxygen. Yet for various reasons he refused the presciption. We were considering suffering a move (2023) yet we were exhausted and afriad. Buster was hoping that the landlady would follow through and not renew the perpetrator’s lease. In 2024 a series of events propelled Buster to move. Via the hospital he basically moved from a Room & Board (RASR) to a Retirement Community (RASR). It took his brother-in-law to help Buster move. Now (2026) Buster after the end of his 2024 episode Buster is highly dependent on SLEEP and what makes it possible every night.
Sleep
Health and the Quality of Sleep
Quality sleep is essential for physical and mental health, serving as a pillar of wellness alongside diet and exercise. It strengthens the immune system, balances hormones, and enhances cognitive function. Poor sleep quality increases risks for chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and dementia, necessitating seven-plus hours of consistent, restorative sleep nightly.
Several Studies link health to quality of sleep
Extensive research confirms that high-quality sleep is crucial for physical and mental health, with poor sleep linked to chronic issues like cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes. Studies show that fewer than six hours of sleep increases mortality risk and impacts cognitive function, while good sleep supports immune health
Sleep and Health - Need Sleep
Adults need 7–9 hours of quality sleep nightly to maintain physical and mental health, with deficiencies increasing risks of heart disease, obesity, stroke, and cognitive decline. Proper sleep boosts immunity, repairs cells, and improves cognitive functions like memory and focus. Key tips include maintaining a consistent schedule and avoiding caffeine late in the day.
How is sleep related to health?
Sleep is precious, too. Numerous studies have found that insufficient sleep increases a person's risk of developing serious medical conditions, including obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Lack of adequate sleep over time has been associated with a shortened lifespan.
Improving Sleep Quality: How Is It Calculated? | Sleep Foundation
https://www.sleepfoundation.org/sleep-hygiene/how-is-sleep-quality-calculated
While it’s known that sleep quality is important to overall health, there is no one definition of sleep quality set by sleep experts. Instead, sleep quality is often defined by sleepers themselves. There are many consistent factors sleepers report when evaluating whether or not they get quality sleep, including sleep disturbances, bedroom environment, and daytime sleep habits. Daytime experiences, such as feeling rested and restored after waking also influence whether or not someone feels they have had quality sleep.
Sleep Hygiene
However, sleep quality and sleep quantity are not directly associated. In other words, people may sleep for a long period of time, but it may be disturbed sleep and therefore not considered quality sleep. Although sleep quality and quantity are different measures, both are affected by sleep hygiene.
What Factors Affect Sleep Quality? (Sample)

Irregular Sleep Schedule
Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, even on weekends, is one of the best ways to improve sleep and overall health. This consistency regulates your body's internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm, which can improve sleep quality, reduce the time it takes to fall asleep, and strengthen your body's ability to stay asleep. A consistent sleep schedule has also been linked to better cardiovascular health, sharper cognition, and improved metabolic function.
Sleeping Environment - Basic
The bedroom should be quiet and dark without excessive lights. Blue light from electronics such as TVs, computers, and phones enhances alertness and should be avoided some hours before bedtime.
Drinking too much caffeine or alcohol
Drinking too much caffeine or alcohol can interfere with sleep by making it harder to fall asleep and reducing the quality of sleep. Caffeine is a stimulant that reduces total sleep time, while alcohol may help you fall asleep initially but leads to fragmented sleep and less REM sleep later in the night. To minimize disruption, limit caffeine consumption in the afternoon and avoid alcohol within a few hours of bedtime.
Drugs
Some prescription drugs, such as diuretics, increase the need to go to the bathroom, which can wake users up during the night. Sleep aids, whether over-the-counter (OTC) or prescribed by a doctor, can cause daytime sleepiness and other side effects.
Snoring
Excessive, loud, or chronic snoring is often a key symptom of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), a serious condition where throat tissues vibrate and collapse, blocking the airway during sleep. Unlike simple snoring, OSA involves dangerous breathing pauses, choking, or gasping, often leading to severe daytime fatigue, cardiovascular issues, and poor sleep quality. Mayo Clinic
Sleep disorders
Disorders like insomnia can cause difficulty in falling or staying asleep and lead to poor sleep quality. Frightening dreams and frequent arousals, which can affect sleep quality, are among the nighttime symptoms of narcolepsy.
Mental health disorders
There is a strong link between mental health disorders like depression and anxiety, and sleep disorders like insomnia. Insomnia is not only a symptom of these conditions but can also worsen them, creating a cycle where poor sleep exacerbates anxiety and depression, and these conditions make it harder to sleep. Racing thoughts at night are a common symptom of this link.
Other Factors
Diet, daytime exercise, travel, and illness can all affect sleep quality, and other factors like caffeine, alcohol, an irregular schedule, and mental health also play a role. These factors can disrupt your sleep by influencing your body's natural rhythms, causing physical discomfort, or creating stress and anxiety.
Behavioral Health
What is the difference between behavioral health and mental health?
Mental health focuses on emotional and psychological well-being (thoughts and feelings), while behavioral health refers to how actions and habits (like diet, substance use, or exercise) impact physical and mental wellness. While often used interchangeably, behavioral health is a broader term encompassing mental health, addressing both the biology and behaviors influencing overall health.
How do I know if I suffer anxiety or bipolar disorder?
Anxiety and bipolar disorder are distinguished by their patterns: anxiety causes persistent, chronic worry, while bipolar disorder involves distinct, cycling episodes of extreme moods (mania/hypomania and depression). Bipolar disorder features high energy and "wired" feelings (mania) alternating with depression, whereas anxiety disorders focus on fear and tension.
Bipolar Disorder and Sleep
Sleep disturbances are a core feature of bipolar disorder, acting as both a symptom and a trigger for mood episodes. Mania/hypomania typically causes a reduced need for sleep (38%–78%), while depression often brings hypersomnia or insomnia. Managing sleep via strict routines and treatment is crucial, as disturbances often precede mood swings. WebMD
How do I know if I suffer bi-polar or a mood disorder?
Bipolar disorder is distinguished from general moodiness or depression by distinct, alternating episodes of mania (high energy, racing thoughts, little sleep) and depression (low energy, sadness). Episodes typically last several days or weeks rather than changing hourly. A professional evaluation is necessary for diagnosis.
What is a mood disorder?
A mood disorder is a mental health condition primarily characterized by significant, long-lasting disturbances in emotional state, such as extreme sadness (depression), excessive elation (mania), or both. These disorders, including depression and bipolar disorder, go beyond daily mood fluctuations and interfere with daily functioning, work, and relationships.
https://laopcenter.com/mental-health/disorder/mood/
Again, How do I know if it is anxiety or bi-polar?
Anxiety disorders involve persistent worry and fear, while bipolar disorder is characterized by extreme mood swings between high-energy mania/hypomania and low-energy depression. Key differences include episodic mood shifts, reckless behavior, and decreased need for sleep during mania, whereas anxiety involves continuous, irrational worry.
Rational Worry
Rational worry is a proportionate, reality-based response to a genuine, immediate threat or risk, such as preparing for a hurricane or avoiding a known danger. It is adaptive, fostering safety and problem-solving, whereas irrational worry is disproportionate, persistent, and not based on present reality.
Sleep as an indicator of health II
Sleep is a vital vital sign and powerful indicator of overall physical and mental health.
Why Sleep Matters
Heart Health:
Blood pressure and heart rate drop during deep rest, giving the cardiovascular system a break.
Immune Defense:
Rest helps the body fight off infections like the common cold and respond better to vaccines.
Metabolism:
Poor rest alters hunger hormones and blood sugar control, raising the risk of diabetes and obesity.
Brain Function:
Sleep clears out toxins and helps form long-term memories.
Signs of Healthy Sleep
Getting 7 to 9 hours per night for most adults.
Falling asleep within 30 minutes.
Waking up feeling refreshed and alert.

Why is sleep so important to health?
Sleep influences processes in the brain that allow it to remember and learn new information. It can also influence brain linkages that increase the ability to concentrate and feel positive emotions. People who get more rest have more energy for tackling difficult tasks. Getting enough sleep also helps to control weight by increasing the body’s ability to burn carbohydrates.
Poor Quality Sleep and Health Risks
On the other hand, having too little or poor quality sleep turns on hormones that affect appetite and promote carbohydrate storage that leads to weight gain. Sleep can also affect heart health: not getting enough sleep can increase the risk for heart disease by increasing high blood pressure, stress hormones and irregular heartbeats.
What is the solution?
Getting at least seven hours of sleep a day is possible by practicing what sleep experts call good sleep hygiene. These are different practices and habits that promote sleep quality and daytime alertness. Here are a few hints:
- Limit daytime naps to 30 minutes so you are tired at night.
- Avoid stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine close to bedtime.
- Exercise to increase your physical energy and allow your tired muscles to relax for a good night’s rest.
- Avoid watching TV in the bedroom, as the artificial light can disrupt sleep rhythms.
- Avoid eating foods that may disrupt your digestive system right before bedtime.
- Check out the Fitness Rankings to see how well people in your city are sleeping!
How is it I don’t get tired at night?
If you're not feeling tired at night, it could be due to a few factors. A disrupted circadian rhythm, poor sleep habits, or stress could be contributing. You might also have a condition like delayed sleep-phase syndrome or be experiencing insomnia. Adjusting your sleep schedule, practicing good sleep hygiene, and managing stress can help.
How do you know the genetics of your sleep disorder?
Knowing the genetics of a sleep disorder involves analyzing family history for patterns, undergoing clinical diagnostic tests (like polysomnography), or participating in specialized research studies using genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Common sleep issues like apnea, insomnia, and restless leg syndrome have strong hereditary components, often involving genes related to circadian rhythms and muscle control.
Overextended for helping others
Overextending happens when we constantly focus on other people's needs over our own and end up feeling burnt out, overwhelmed, and anxious. It's essential to slow down and make time for self-care, but it can be hard to break the cycle of overextending
Aside - Personal Parity - In all our affairs
Based on the search results, "Personal Parity - In all our affairs" can be understood as applying the concept of equality, fairness, and mutual respect across all aspects of one's personal life and interactions.
Natural Sleep versus Augmented Sleep
Natural sleep and augmented (drug-induced or technologically enhanced) sleep differ significantly in quality, purpose, and physiological impact. While natural sleep is essential for full, restorative, and properly cycled REM and NREM sleep, augmented sleep—particularly through medications—is often less refreshing and may disrupt natural sleep architecture.
Natural Sleep Architecture
Natural sleep architecture is the structured, cyclic pattern of sleep stages—comprising NREM (stages 1-3) and REM sleep—that the brain cycles through every 90–110 minutes. A normal night includes 4–5 cycles, shifting from deep, restorative sleep in the first half to longer REM (dreaming) sleep later. It is crucial for physical repair, memory consolidation, and emotional regulation.
Natural Sleep
If we could we would pick (natural) sleep not augmented by medication. In recent times we have stayed up more than 72 hours waiting to get tired and go to sleep. When we were first diagnosed two doctors indicated that we would be on medication for the rest of our life. They also indicated that Buster would never get better. As of 2026 we are dependent on medication to sleep.

Bullying and Sleep Disturbances
Crude Associations between Bullying and Sleep Disturbances
People who were exposed to bullying in the past were also at a higher risk of having sleep disturbances than were those who had never been exposed. The more frequent the exposure to bullying, the higher the prevalence of sleep disturbances.
Introduction - 20190826-M: Table - Types of Bullies & Examples
20210501-SA: For our Sleep Ability installment for our current Digital Appointment Build (DAB) we chose to address Bullying in the Rent a Share Room (RASR) environment. Bullying has to be addressed with Housemate & Roommate Matching as well as intervention. Below are some features that can influence Sleep and Sleep Ability. The notions below come from Keith “Buster” Torkelson’s lived experience (LE) in a RASR environment. Even though Sleep is in the service domain for both Buster’s Primary Care Physician (PCP) and his Behavioral Health Doctor (BHD) they only help remotely. Too much Bullying in a given day generates fatigue and worry. If it happens in the middle of the night it directly impairs sleep. At Shank’s Truck Stop Buster has shared a room with all but: Wayne and Ted. Eventually, Buster shared with Ted a general bully and sleep bully. Ted also had un-treated Sleep Apnea. Circa 2024 Ted died in his bed.
Aside - Ted Passes Away (Expires)
Since writing (2024) this Ted has passed away. The landlord indicates Ted died overnight in his bed. We tried to help Ted on numerous occasions. In November of 2023 we visited Ted in the Psych Ward at Global Medical Center Santa Ana. He was released with an ineffective treatment plan. Without the right meds his condition only worsened.

How to Start a Peer Driven Room & Board Advisory Coalition
Cynthia White, MFT Chief Advocate, Patients’ Rights
County of San Bernardino
Peer Driven Coalition
A peer-driven coalition is a community-led model where individuals with lived experience or shared interests, rather than outside experts, design and lead change initiatives. These coalitions prioritize direct, bottom-up action—such as peer-to-peer fundraising, support networks, or grassroots advocacy—to build social, economic, or health-related improvements.
Why do we need peer driven coalitions?
Peer-driven coalitions are essential to amplify collective power, foster authentic community ownership, and achieve sustainable, grassroots-led change. By uniting individuals with shared lived experiences, these coalitions build trust, bridge diverse perspectives, and provide necessary support, ensuring solutions are effective, relevant, and not just imposed from the top.
Why is oversight of Room and Boards needed?
Oversight of Room and Board (specifically in HOAs, student housing, or community settings) is essential to minimize liabilities, ensure safety, and maintain property value. Effective oversight ensures compliance with regulations, protects financial stability, and enforces structural maintenance. Without it, organizations risk legal hazards, mismanagement, and damaged public trust.
Sleep & Ability
Sleep
Sleep is a naturally recurring state of mind and body, characterized by altered consciousness, relatively inhibited sensory activity, reduced muscle activity and inhibition of nearly all voluntary muscles during rapid eye movement sleep, and reduced interactions with surroundings. Wikipedia
Ability
Possession of the means or skill to do something."The manager had lost his ability to motivate the players". Talent, skill, or proficiency in a particular area.

Aside - Assignment – Proscribing Boundaries
To proscribe boundaries is to officially forbid, prohibit, or condemn certain limits, behaviors, or actions. It means setting strict, negative constraints—declaring something "out of bounds" or unacceptable, often by law or authority. It is the opposite of prescribing (recommending/ordering). Vocabulary.com
The Landmark Boundary Assignment
Back in 2012 Dr. Ravinder Singh gave us the assignment “Pt needs boundaries to be set, especially with females”. Ever since we have been studying boundaries. We created a Pinterest Board call Psychiatry for Dummies (now for Geniuses) to compare our online boundaries with those of others. Yet it appears that our Board has been lost for supposedly crossing boundaries. We finally brought it to Pinterest’s attention that we were wrongfully terminated. As of 2026 Pinterest has given us our account back. Our online boundaries are conservative.

Stealing from the Be Well Orange County Blueprint
The Be Well Orange County (OC) Blueprint is a strategic framework aimed at transforming the region’s mental health care system into a world-class, collaborative ecosystem by 2030. It leverages public-private partnerships to "flip the triangle," prioritizing prevention and community-based care, anchored by regional Wellness Hubs and mobile crisis response teams.
Reaching Vision - Define and Develop – Sleep Related Resources
Our overarching goal is to place or re-place consumers of behavioral health services into Good Beds. A good bed requires that the environment permits sleep (Sleep Able) and the individual has the resources to get a good night’s sleep (Sleep Ability). We had formally suggested to the OC Health Care Agency for the need for a solution to Housing and Bed Finding. The solution included a Housing Help Line, Housing Work Group, and Housing Advisory Board. We have been pushing our solution since 2018 or even before. As of 2026 we have failed to sell the county and therefore we “Kill” the project. We are transferring our effort to working on Advanced Planning.
Brand New Day (BND)
BND was our insurer and psychosocial program for 2012-2022. In all those years they did little to help us with Buster’s sleep issues. We needed to find me a better bed yet none of the coordinators could seem to find the time to help.

Tangent - Delusional People and Mirrors
When delusional people look into mirrors, they can experience specific psychological and neurological conditions. The most prominent of these is mirrored-self misidentification, a rare disorder where a person firmly believes their reflection is a stranger, a relative, or an intruder rather than themselves.
Mirrored-Self Misidentification
The Core Belief:
The person looks in the mirror and does not recognize their own face. They often think the reflection is a stranger following them or living in the house.
Brain Connection:
This issue usually links to damage in the right side of the brain. It happens often in patients with dementia, stroke, or a head injury.
Behavior:
Patients may talk to the mirror, yell at the reflection, or try to chase the "stranger" away.
Other Mirror-Related Delusions and Disorders
Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD):
People with severe BDD look in the mirror and see a distorted body part. Their brain exaggerates flaws. This causes extreme distress or long hours spent checking the mirror.
Psychosis and Schizophrenia:
People with persecutory beliefs may think mirrors hide hidden cameras or recording devices. They might cover mirrors or avoid looking into them out of fear.
Mirror Agnosia:
A separate brain-based issue where a person understands a mirror is a reflective surface, but they cannot use spatial cues correctly in the mirror world.

Major William Challenge: 20190112-SA: Notes
When William started acting out, I heard Mel one of our landlords downstairs dealing with William and decided not to interfere with him. Earlier, I had mentioned to William how mean and abusive he was to Gloria our other live in landlord.
20190113-SUN: Notes
We plan to give William another night. Last night William thrashed until 2 am. He also said he has one of the best beds in the house. William has said over-and-over that he cannot control himself. I suspect he has Tourette Syndrome. William wastes his time in bed not sleeping. He just coughs, twitches, and shakes. William’s mattress is located on the bunk above mine. My bed is doubles as my workspace. Ted at 4pm finally came for William. William has been restless since 10am. Before leaving William said he would not sleep tonight. Aside – In addition William has rubbery skin.
20190113- SUN (Hand Delivered) - Dear Gloria the live in landlord
Before he left for dinner William said he would not sleep tonight. He said he could not control himself. Today he spent his time in bed coughing from 10am to 4pm. Last night William thrashed violently shaking our bunkbed until 2 am. William says over-and-over that he cannot control himself. Please be ready to help me if you can. Thank You, Keith.

Right to sleep a fundamental right, says Supreme Court | India News
Feb 24, 2012
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has broadened the ambit of right of life to bring in a citizen's right to sleep peacefully under it. A citizen has a right to sound sleep because it is fundamental to life, the Supreme Court said on Thursday while ruling that the police action on a sleeping crowd at Baba Ramdev's rally at RamlilaMaidan amounted to violation of their crucial right.
Fundamental and Basic Requirement
"Sleep is essential for a human being to maintain the delicate balance of health necessary for its very existence and survival. Sleep is, therefore, a fundamental and basic requirement without which the existence of life itself would be in peril," the court said, terming it as a basic human right.
Inviolable Right
Authorities have taken steps to protect citizens from being Disturbed while they are asleep, like placing curbs on the playing of music late at night. But Tuesday's order elevates right to sleep in the hierarchy of rights and may goad the authorities to protect it. A bench of Justices B S Chauhan and Swatanter Kumar was unanimous that the police erred gravely by clamping prohibitory orders under Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code on the night of June 4 when the gathering at Ramdev's yoga camp was sleeping peacefully. Though Justice Kumar wrote the lead judgment, Justice Chauhan elaborated on sleep as a fundamental right crucial to life and put it on the same plane as right to privacy and right to food, consistently held by the Supreme Court as an inviolable right which was part of right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution.
Right of Privacy
"Right of privacy and the right to sleep have always been treated to be a fundamental right like a right to breathe, to eat, to drink, to blink etc," he said while slamming Delhi Police for using unwarranted force on the sleeping crowd, thereby breaching fundamental right to privacy.
Supreme Court
But no citizen could claim sleeping to be his fundamental right. "Undoubtedly, reasonable regulation of time, place and manner of the act of sleeping would not violate any constitutional guarantee, for the reason that a person may not claim that sleeping is his fundamental right, and therefore, he has a right to sleep in the premises of the Supreme Court itself or within the precincts of Parliament," Justice Chauhan said.
Health
He said sleep for a human being was a basic necessity and not a luxury. "If this sleep is disturbed, the mind gets disoriented and it disrupts the health cycle. If this disruption is brought about in odd hours preventing an individual from getting normal sleep, it also causes energy misbalance, indigestion and also affects cardiovascular health," the judge said.
Metabolic Adverse Effects
"Sleep, therefore, is a self-rejuvenating element of our life cycle and is, therefore, part and parcel of human life. The disruption of sleep is to deprive a person of a basic priority, resulting in adverse metabolic effects," he said.
Aside - Public Peace
…"to arouse a person suddenly brings about a feeling of shock and numbness. The pressure of a sudden awakening results in almost a void of sensation. Such an action, therefore, does affect the basic life of an individual," Justice Chauhan said. Rejecting the justification given by the police that the crowd was planning to disrupt peace, the judge said, "To presume that a person was scheming to disrupt public peace while asleep would be unjust and would be entering into the dreams of that person."
FYI - Fundamental Right
Quoting a US court judgment, Justice Chauhan said, "The citizens/persons have a right to leisure; to sleep; not to hear and to remain silent. The knock at the door, whether by day or by night, as a prelude to a search without authority of law amounts to be police incursion into privacy and violation of fundamental right of a citizen."
Constitution - India
…he said because of this, many countries have clamped complete night curfews at airports (that is, ban on landing and take-off at late night hours), for the reason that the concept of sound sleep had been associated with sound health which is an inseparable facet of Article 21 (right to life) of the Indian Constitution.

Staggering Costs
Based on data from the Sleep Association and Datacenter we calculate that 23.6% of adults in the United States suffer from some form of sleep problem. So far we have found no literature addressing Sleep Bullies. The Sleep Association indicates that: “The public health consequences from sleep disorders…are staggering”. Sleep issues affect both the disabled and the abled alike.
Sleep Banking
Sleep banking is the proactive practice of getting extra sleep (1–2 hours beyond the recommended 7–9 hours) for several nights before an anticipated period of sleep deprivation, such as long shifts, travel, or intense projects. It acts as a temporary buffer to boost alertness, improve cognitive performance, and reduce the impact of fatigue, rather than a long-term cure for chronic debt.

Preventable Medical Errors
Preventable medical errors are a major cause of death in U.S. hospitals, with estimates ranging from roughly 100,000 to over 250,000 deaths annually. Sleep deprivation among medical professionals, particularly residents and nurses, is a well-documented contributor to these errors, leading to significant cognitive performance lapses
SDS = Sleep Deprivation Statistics [Time Frames Unknown]
100,000 deaths occur each year in US hospitals due to medical errors and sleep deprivation have been shown to make a significant contribution.
Estimates from the landmark Institute of Medicine report show that medical errors cause between 44,000 and 98,000 deaths each year in U.S. hospitals, while newer studies suggest the total may be even higher, and doctor fatigue makes a major contribution.
The Death Toll
The 1999 Estimate:
A famous report titled To Err is Human stated that up to 98,000 people die annually from preventable mistakes in hospitals.
Newer Research:
Recent analyses, such as a Johns Hopkins study, suggest that medical errors may cause over 250,000 deaths each year, making them a leading cause of death in the United States.
How Sleep Deprivation Contributes
Exhausted Workers:
Doctors and nurses often work very long shifts, sometimes lasting 24 to 30 hours straight.
Impaired Brain Function:
A lack of sleep slows down reaction times, lowers attention spans, and causes poor decision-making.
Higher Error Rates:
Exhausted medical staff are more likely to make dangerous medication mistakes, surgical missteps, or diagnostic failures. Research on sleep deprivation in resident physicians links extreme fatigue to a direct drop in patient safety.
Ways to Prevent Errors
Shorter Shifts:
Limiting consecutive work hours for medical interns and residents helps reduce severe fatigue.
Better Handoffs:
Clear communication when shifting patient care between different doctors prevents missed information.
Digital Checklists:
Using electronic prescribing and safety timeouts helps catch human mistakes before they harm patients.

Revisit Bullying
Bullying
There is significant research and popular interest regarding factors that "bully" (negatively impact) our sleep and the relationship between sleep-deprived individuals who exhibit bullying behaviors.
Sleep Bullying
"Sleep bullying" usually refers to how being bullied (at school, online, or at work) ruins a person's sleep usually refers to how being bullied (at school, online, or at work) ruins a person's sleep. Stress, anxiety, and rumination (replaying bad events over and over) make it hard to fall asleep, stay asleep, or get deep rest. Lack of sleep can also make kids more cranky or impulsive, which sometimes leads to bad behavior.
Intentionally interfering with another’s sleep
Intentionally interfering with another person's sleep is a behavior that can range from a minor personal conflict to a severe form of psychological abuse or a criminal offense, depending on the context and intent.
Common Contexts and Legal/Psychological Implications
Relationship Abuse and Domestic Violence:
In intimate partner violence, sleep deprivation is frequently used as a tactic of psychological abuse and coercive control. Perpetrators may intentionally wake their partners, keep them up with forced arguments, or create loud noises to weaken their cognitive function, emotional resilience, and independence.
Workplace or Institutional Harassment:
Deliberately disrupting someone's sleep in a workplace, military setting, or residential institution can constitute harassment, hazing, or bullying.
Criminal Actions and Tort Law:
Depending on the jurisdiction and severity, intentionally interfering with someone's sleep can lead to legal consequences:
Assault or Harassment Charges:
If the behavior is persistent and intended to cause distress.
Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress (IIED):
A civil tort if the conduct is extreme, outrageous, and causes severe emotional or physical harm.
Nuisance Violations:
Deliberately disrupting a neighbor's sleep with noise can violate local noise ordinances or constitute a private nuisance.
Torture:
On a systemic level, forced sleep deprivation is recognized internationally as a form of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment and torture.
Health Impacts of Forced Sleep Deprivation
Sleep is vital for basic human functioning. Deliberate interference can cause:
Cognitive decline:
Memory lapses, poor decision-making, and severe disorientation.
Mental health strain:
Extreme anxiety, depression, paranoia, and emotional volatility.
Physical health risks:
Weakened immune system, cardiovascular stress, and chronic fatigue.

FYI - Why retain a full link rather than create a hyperlink?
Retaining a full URL instead of a descriptive hyperlink provides immediate transparency and works best for printed materials.
Benefits of Full URLs
Print Readiness:
Users can read and manually type the exact address when digital hovering or clicking is impossible.
Absolute Transparency:
Readers see the exact domain and path without needing to inspect or hover over hidden anchor text.
Fallback Safety:
If a rich-media link preview or rich text editor fails to render on a forum, blog comment, or plain-text email, the destination remains fully readable.
Why Hyperlinks Are Generally Preferred Online
Accessibility:
Screen readers spell out every single character of a raw URL, which creates a frustrating experience for visually impaired users.
Clean Aesthetics:
Descriptive anchor text reduces visual clutter and fits naturally into the flow of a sentence.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO):
Keyword-rich anchor text gives search engines valuable context about the destination page.

Sleep Preparations
Hypnotic Drugs
Hypnotic drugs, also known as sleeping pills, are a class of medications primarily used to induce and maintain sleep, particularly for those experiencing insomnia. They are closely related to sedatives, which are used to relieve anxiety and promote relaxation. Both sedatives and hypnotics can affect the central nervous system, slowing down brain activity and inducing drowsiness.
Non-narcotic Sleep Preparations
Non-narcotic sleep preparations include over-the-counter antihistamines, natural hormones, and prescription medications that do not cause chemical dependency or addiction.
Over-the-Counter (OTC) Options
Diphenhydramine:
Found in Benadryl and night-time pain relievers, this sedating antihistamine helps induce drowsiness. It is only meant for short-term use (up to 14 days) because tolerance builds quickly and side effects include dry mouth and daytime grogginess.
Doxylamine Succinate:
The active ingredient in Unisom, another sedating antihistamine that stays active in the body longer than diphenhydramine.
Melatonin:
A natural hormone that supports your sleep-wake cycle, helpful for mild issues like jet lag. Quality can vary because supplements lack strict regulation.
Natural Supplements:
Options like Passionflower, valerian root, and magnesium help promote relaxation with a low risk of dependence.
Prescription Non-Habit-Forming Options
Melatonin Receptor Agonists:
Drugs like ramelteon mimic natural melatonin to help you fall asleep without withdrawal risks.
Orexin Receptor Antagonists:
Medications like suvorexant block wakefulness chemicals in the brain to help you fall and stay asleep.
Sedating Antidepressants:
Low-dose doxepin or trazodone are often prescribed off-label to improve sleep maintenance safely under a doctor's care.
FYI – AI - If you'd like, tell me: Are you having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep? How long has this sleep issue been happening? I can help you narrow down which non-narcotic option fits your needs best.
Sedative versus Hypnotic
The main difference is the degree of central nervous system depression and the intended goal. Sedatives calm anxiety and reduce excitement while keeping a person awake. Hypnotics are stronger or given at higher doses to cause drowsiness and actively induce sleep.
3 Places – Over 1 year each - On Pseudo-stability
Pseudo-stability, in various contexts, refers to a state that appears stable but is not truly so, often due to underlying instability or a deceptive appearance of equilibrium. It can describe a state where a system resists change but eventually succumbs, or a situation where a temporary balance masks underlying issues.
FYI - Agent versus Environment
In artificial intelligence, an agent is a decision-making entity that interacts with an environment. The agent perceives its surroundings (the environment) through sensors, processes this information, and takes actions to influence the environment through actuators. The environment, in turn, responds to the agent's actions, providing feedback and new states for the agent to process.
Medical Model Timeline
The Medical Model, which views illness as a physical condition with specific biological causes, has evolved significantly over time. Early forms of this model existed before 400 BC, with figures like Hippocrates suggesting physical explanations for illness. However, the model didn't dominate until the 19th century during the Scientific Revolution. Key milestones include the discovery of germ theory in the 19th century, the development of vaccines and antibiotics, and the understanding of disease transmission. More recently, there's been a shift towards a more psychosocial understanding of health and illness, recognizing the interplay of biological, psychological, and social factors.
Medical Model of Treating Mental Illness
The medical model of treating mental illness views psychological disorders as physical diseases with biological origins that require clinical diagnosis and medical intervention.
Core Assumptions and Methods
Biological Cause:
Assumes symptoms stem from genetics, neuroanatomy, and biochemical or neurotransmitter imbalances in the brain.
Diagnosis:
Uses standardized classification systems (like the DSM) to categorize observable symptom clusters into specific syndromes, similar to diagnosing physical conditions like diabetes.
Treatment:
Relies heavily on prescription medications—such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)—to alter brain chemistry and manage symptoms.
Strengths and Benefits
Standardization:
Provides clear diagnostic criteria and measurable outcomes backed by empirical research.
Destigmatization:
Helps frame mental illness as a medical health condition rather than a personal or moral failing.
Symptom Relief:
Offers effective pharmacological tools that can stabilize severe or acute psychiatric distress.
Criticisms and Limitations
Oversimplification:
May reduce complex human experiences and social distress (such as poverty or trauma) to mere biological defects.
Neglect of Environment:
Often overlooks environmental, relational, and societal factors that influence well-being.
Paternalism:
Can foster a one-directional doctor-patient relationship with less focus on active patient-led coping strategies.

Addressing a Long-Term sleep Debt
Recovering from long-term sleep debt requires a consistent, gradual approach rather than instant fixes. Repay debt by adding 1–2 hours of sleep nightly or through weekend naps, prioritizing a cool, dark [QUIET] environment, and avoiding late caffeine or screens. It may take several weeks of consistent, quality rest to fully recover
How and when did our sleep disorder become irreversible?
The shift toward a modern "sleep disorder" became profoundly established over the past two centuries, accelerating with the Industrial Revolution and finalizing with the 24/7 digital era. While often treated as reversible through lifestyle changes, chronic sleep loss can create lasting injuries, including neuron loss, persistent cognitive impairment, and increased risks of chronic disease.

Sleep Ability: Sleep a Currency for Health
Sleep is the foundational currency for health, acting as a crucial, free investment that repairs the body, consolidates memory, and clears brain toxins. Consistently getting 7–9 hours of quality sleep reduces risks of chronic diseases (heart disease, diabetes), boosts immunity, and enhances productivity, making it essential for both physical and mental well-being.

Sleep Ability – Agent, Environment & Host
Sleep ability is the personal (host) aspects of sleep. It takes into consideration Sleep Factor Analysis (SFA) such as time in bed to get to sleep and duration of one’s rejuvenating sleep. The host is highly dependent on the environment and who they share with in the same room with (agent). The overall process Roommate Matching is trial and error. Rating the physical quality of the bed, especially if it is provided, is important also. For example, based on 12 years of lived experience a provided bed with Bed Bugs is deplorable and intolerable.

Define Methodology in Sociology
Methodology in sociology refers to the scientific way that a researcher chooses to test a social theory or concept. Sociological methods include the same methods used in other social science disciplines, such as experimentation, observation, surveys, quasi-experiments, content analysis and focus groups.
Quasi-experiment
A quasi-experiment is an empirical interventional study used to estimate the causal impact of an intervention on target population without random assignment. ... Quasi-experiments are subject to concerns regarding internal validity, because the treatment and control groups may not be comparable at baseline.
Focus Group
A demographically diverse group of people assembled to participate in a guided discussion about a particular product before it is launched, or to provide ongoing feedback on a political campaign, television series, etc.
Content Analysis
Content analysis is a systematic research method used by sociologists to analyze social life by interpreting, coding, and quantifying words, images, and messages from documents, media, and cultural artifacts. It converts qualitative data (e.g., films, newspapers,, art) into quantitative data to identify patterns, trends, and societal meanings.

Sleep Factor Analysis
Sleep factor analysis involves evaluating key components like duration, efficiency, regularity, and timing to measure sleep health, typically resulting in a 0–100 score (80+ is good). It uses metrics like sleep onset time, Wake After Sleep Onset (WASO), and total sleep time (TST) to determine restorative quality.
Transparent Incident Capture
Transparent incident capture is the practice of systematically recording, documenting, and sharing details about unexpected events—such as security breaches, safety accidents, or near-misses—in a clear, open, and timely manner. This approach fosters trust among stakeholders, allows for accurate root cause analysis, and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements.
FYI - A Mishap
A mishap is an unfortunate, unplanned, or unlucky accident, ranging from minor mistakes to serious incidents causing injury or damage. Often characterized as a "small accident" or, in military terms, a major event with high costs ($2M+ for Class A), they often stem from poor planning, human error, or bad luck.
Root Cause Analysis – Sleep Issues
Root Cause Analysis (RCA) is a structured, systematic process used to identify the underlying, foundational causes of problems or incidents rather than just addressing symptoms. By finding the "why" behind an event, organizations can implement permanent solutions, prevent recurrence, and reduce risks. Key methods include 5-Whys, Fishbone diagrams, and Pareto analysis. Root Cause Analysis (RCA) in behavioral health is a structured, team-based, and proactive process used to identify the underlying system failures, environmental factors, or processes that lead to adverse incidents (e.g., suicide, severe behavioral outbursts) or poor outcomes, rather than focusing on blame. It involves identifying causal factors through methods like the "Five Whys" or Fishbone diagrams, aimed at redesigning systems to prevent recurrence.

Our overall Sleep related solution (product) was BedBusters. Now we are leaning towards OC Beds a Housing Solutions Bundle.
Define Sleep Ability Brief
Sleep Ability is a Mentalation Solutions Group (MSG) Product. We began formally defining Sleep Ability on January 7, 2019 in conjunction with our Housing Advisory Board (HAB) idea. In our document: LA_Room_SleepAbility_Derived_23073103_Notes V2025 we list items that for us and others promote Sleep. Sleep Management is big business. Sleep issues do not discriminate. We find that as Keith “Buster” Torkelson (B. 1959) grows older his sleep requirement has become more absolute. This means he must continue to sleep on a daily basis.
Sleep Management is big business [Circa 2026]
The sleep management industry is experiencing substantial growth, transforming into a massive, multi-faceted market driven by increasing consumer and clinical awareness of sleep’s critical impact on overall health. The global sleep economy, which encompasses technology, healthcare, and consumer goods, is projected to surpass $1 trillion by 2033
Market size and growth [Circa 2026]
Overall Sleep Economy: Estimates for the global sleep economy vary, but some sources suggest a market size of nearly $600 billion, potentially expanding to trillions if daytime and nighttime factors influencing sleep are considered.
